i went up to Westmont on thrusday and firday for an "Admitted Students weekend". i honestly wasn't that excited about going, since i've been to Westmont maybe 4 or 5 times before, but allison was going, so at least i'd have someone to talk to and we always seem to have a good time together.
my mom and i arrived around 12:30 and after some wondering around (actually she was wondering, we were driving) found allison, who had, had a music audition earlier. i wasn't there, but i'm sure she did great! after checking in, we sat in this intro seminar thing, until 2:00, when my mom and i left allison all by her lonesome and went to go meet with the tennis coach. i got to play with the team and kind of give the coach a feel for my game. there was another girl checking out Westmont from San Diego, who also played. okay, i'm sorry if this sound really bad, which it will and forgive me for being judgmental, but this girl just rubbed me the wrong way. maybe my nerves were just a bit on edge, but there were a couple of times i could tell i was being really cold towards her because she was annoying me and had to remind myself to be nice. after we were done she goes "so, how do you think it went"
i didn't really want to talk and just wanted to call allison to meet up with her again, so i sort of gave an "oh, okay" kind of answer.
then she jumps on that and goes "'oh, okay' as in you don't want to go out for the team anymore?"
like i said, my nerves could have just been a little on edge, but what the heck is that supposed to mean? the way she said it totally implied what i was thinking it did, so i go "no, okay as in i wasn't completely on, but i'm still really interested in playing in college"
then she asks me for my phone number in order to "keep each other posed on our college and tennis plans." p-lease! i'm sorry, but she was totally trying to compete with me and that is something i do NOT like, since it wasn't even a competition. i mean, i don't care if you THINK you are better than me or feel like you have to prove something...i don't even know you. oh well, whatever. i didn't give her my number, but wasn't going to be outright mean, now, this is really bad, but i didn't want to give it to her, so i switched up a few numbers in my cell and yeah...if she has some random person's number...sorry.
anyways, the playing went pretty well, considering i haven't been playing as much as i would have liked to. my scores against the girls were decent and the coach said that although i wouldn't start out with a scholarship (only the top 4 get one), i could probably come on as a 'walk on' and work my way up. we shall see what happens.
after tennis, my mom and i met up with allison and went to go meet her brother, matt and his girlfriend. thanks to allison's keen directional skills, we got lost, but eventually found the right place. we had dinner and then my mom left to go to her hotel. while allison was at an orchestra thing with her brother, i met my host, erica, who was so nice, and her friend. we talked and then we went to another dorm, so she could introduce me to some people. i met one guy who asked me how my walk with Christ was going, which totally caught me off guard, but i replied "it's goin' good...always trying to make it better". then he goes "no, i'm totally kidding, i would never ask someone that i just met that. you could have said you were satanic and i wouldn't have done anything, but i'm glad to hear it's going good." random, but funny. i met another kid (also an admitted student) named dean, who goes to wilson, knows betsy and carries a pocket protector (so we called him pocket protector kid). and then some other kid who is too lazy to watch tv, so he really can't be considered lazy because he doesn't watch tv, or he could be considered extremly lazy because he is too lazy to to such a lazy activity of watching tv. and that all resulted from "hi, my name is danielle". and i thought people would think allison and i were odd. speaking of allison, she called me a while later, lost (surprise, surprise) and said she had never met up with her host, nor did she have the paper any longer that told her who her host was. she ended up staying with me in erica's dorm, which worked out better.
we spent the next hour wondering around the campus in the dark and then watching a talent show going on, while our hosts were at a dorm meeting thing. later that night, all the hosts decided to try and teach each other dance moves outside of the dorm building. it was hilarious! allison and i met some kid that we never learned the name of, but he wore a beanie, so we called him "beanie boy" (not to his face, of course). i think he was the weirdest person i have EVER met. he was beyond weird. we were trying to make conversation, so we go "where are you from?"
"i'm from the sky"
me: "oh, so you just fell from the sky and landed here?"
"no, i climbed...it was very orderly."
....*silence...right
then, pocket protector kid shows up and starts talking about how allison and i are in our own separate world and every time we would talk to each other he would go "see, you are doing it again". he also told us a story that went something like this "i once knew a man named branden who was tall and thin and then he married a woman named brandy who was short and fat...how odd." (no idea what the names were, but something like that). yeah and that was just out of the blue...how do you even respond to that?!?
so, when we finally announce that we are going to bed, beanie boy keeps standing outside, waiting for us to go in because he "couldn't ascend back into the sky with us watching".
if you think i am making this stuff up, you are wrong! even ask allison. these people were just plain odd.
four hours later, we woke up to the sound of my phone alarm "ding-donging" like a doorbell and then not being able to find it because allison was on top of it. we went to breakfast around 6:45 and unfortunately weren't able to escape eye contact with beanie boy and were forced to sit with him. during breakfast he wanted to discuss the importance of animal souls, along with the benefits of socialism with us. needless to say, we downed our cereal and tea and ran out of there, fast.
we had two classes to sit in on in the morning. i sat in on Old Testament and Literature, while allison sat in on Circuits and Electronics and Math something. ha! i actually fell asleep in the first one, not because it wasn't interesting, but because i was really tired. when i walked into the Lit class, the professor goes "are you an admitted student?"
"yes"
"where are your from"
"long beach"
"why?"
"uh, why am i from long beach?"
"yes"
"hm, because that was my destiny..."
"ah, i've just never heard anyone admit it before...congratulations"
that was in front of the entire class, mind you. weird...
after classes, i met allison again for chapel and then we ate lunch, where all the admissions counselors sat at our table and were hilarious! they were showing us how the make the cups fly out of each other by spinning them and then blowing into them. you put one cup inside another, spin it and then blow into the crevice between the two and the cup goes flying out. they were SO funny! it was kind of cool to see them all relaxed instead of in their "admissions counselor" manner. funny stuff.
later, we had meetings on what our intended majors might be and got info on that, which was helpful. right now i'm thinking of being a Liberal Studies Major (which is teaching) and and Art Minor, but we will see.
i got home on friday around 5:00 and then got to babysit katie for a bit...boy was i tired!
just as i am now, so i think i will go to bed and then post a video as well as tell you some of my feelings about this experience.
sorry that was so long...thanks for reading!
